During the week of September 10-16, 2001, Big Island police arrested 16 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers arrested were involved in traffic accidents and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 572 DUI arrests, a 34 percent decrease from the 865 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 1,606 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,552 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent.

There have been 20 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 30 during the same period last year, a decrease of 33 percent. Six of the traffic fatalities this year were related to driving while intoxicated, compared to 11 at the same time last year, a decrease of 45 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
