During the week of November 19-25, 2001, Big Island police arrested nine motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 725 DUI arrests, a 28 percent decrease from the 1,007 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 2,028 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,975 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.

There have been 25 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 33 during the same period last year, a decrease of 24 percent. Twelve of the traffic fatalities this year were related to driving while intoxicated, compared to 13 at the same time last year, a decrease of 8 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
