During the week of November 25-December 1, 2002, Big Island police arrested 14 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident, and four were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 795 DUI arrests, compared to 736 during the same period last year, an increase of 8 percent.

There have been 2,036 major accidents so far this year, compared to 2,068 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2 percent.

There have been 26 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 26 during the same period last year. The DUI fatality count so far this year is nine, compared to 13 during the same period last year, a decrease of 31 percent. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to three during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
