During the week of December 18-24, 2001, Big Island police arrested 37 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident.

So far this year, there have been 805 DUI arrests, a 24 percent decrease from the 1,061 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 2,235 major accidents so far this year, compared to 2,133 during the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent.

There have been 29 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 37 during the same period last year, a decrease of 22 percent. Twelve of the traffic fatalities this year were related to driving while intoxicated, compared to 14 at the same time last year, a decrease of 14 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
