During the week of February 24, 2009, throughMarch 2, 2009, Big Island police arrested 30 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. One was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 206 DUI arrests compared with 222 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 266 major accidents so far this year compared with 326 during the same period last year, a decrease of 18.4 percent.

So far this year, there were five traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with eight during the same period last year, an decrease of 37.5 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
