MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of June 1-6, 1999, Big Island police arrested 39 motorists for drunk driving. Nine of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 579 DUI arrests, a 39 percent increase over the 418 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 33 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 923, compared to 989 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent.

There have been nine traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 15 fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 40 percent.

There has been one recorded alcohol-related traffic fatality so far this year, compared to eight at the same time last year, a decrease of 88 percent.
