MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of July 18 – July 24, 2006, Big Island police arrested 24 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been a total of 676 DUI arrests compared with a revised total of 548 during the same period last year, an increase of 23 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There has been a revised total of 1,419 major accidents so far this year, compared with a revised total of 1,334 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.

There has been a total of 18 (Revised total–Fatalities No. 19 and 20 reclassifed) traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared with 19 for the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
