During the week of September 5 – September 11, 2006, Big Island police arrested 24 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and five were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been a total of 855 DUI arrests compared with a revised total of 702 during the same period last year, an increase of 22 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been a revised total of 1,773 major accidents so far this year compared with a total of 1,663 during the same period last year, an increase of 7 percent.

There have been a total of 27 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year compared with 28 for the same period last year, a decrease of 4 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
