A fire at a Mauna Lani condominium complex in South Kohala caused an estimated $4 million in damages to several units.

Responding to a 6:45 a.m. call Friday (February 2, 2001), South Kohala police and fire units arrived to find the F Building of The Islands at Mauna Lani engulfed in flames.

By the time the blaze was brought under control at 11:30 a.m., condominium Units F1 and F2 were completely destroyed; Unit F3 sustained 50 percent damages; and Unit F4 sustained smoke damage.

A preliminary Fire Department investigation indicated that the fire started in the ceiling of Unit F1 and was possibly caused by an electrical failure. No foul play is suspected at this time.
