Big Island Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man who assaulted a 61-year-old Puna man at Liliuokalani Park in Hilo on Friday, September 29, at 8 p.m.

The victim was punched several times on the face before he fled to a hotel on Banyan Drive and sought shelter. Police and fire rescue personnel responded to the hotel.

The suspect was described as a Polynesian man in his mid-20s about 6 feet tall, at least 200 pounds with a large build and medium-length black hair. He spoke with a Samoan accent and was wearing a pullover coat. The suspect was accompanied by two other males and three females. One of the females also looked Polynesian and had a Samoan accent.

Police ask that anyone with information about the case call Officer Aubrey Auna at 961-2213 or the Police Department’s non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in East Hawaii or 329-8181 in West Hawaii. Calls to Crime Stoppers are kept confidential.
