MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Police have identified a 19-year-old male who apparently drowned Saturday (September 15, 2001) while swimming with friends at Piihonua Falls in the upper Kaumana area of Hilo.

The youth was identified as Melchor Sambrano, of Waimea. Officers said Sambrano was a student at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Responding to a 12:30 p.m. call, fire rescue personnel tried to unsuccessfully to revive the youth. They took the victim to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:58 p.m.

The case has been classified as a public accident.
