MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Hilo Juvenile Aid Section detectives have charged a 27-year-old Hilo man with several offenses as the result of an assault and abduction that took place Tuesday evening (March 28, 2000).

At 9:48 p.m. Wednesday, officers charged George Kailiawa Jr. with one count of kidnapping, one count of terroristic threatening and one count of assault. He is being held in lieu of $26,000 bail.

Responding to a call Tuesday evening, police officers determined that the Mountain View, Puna, girl was fishing in waters off Hilo’s Keaukaha area when she was approached by an unknown male.

The suspect punched her, took her to his car and threw her in the trunk. The suspect then drove the victim to the Panaewa area, and when he let the girl out of the trunk, he discovered the she was not the person he had thought she was.

Police arrested Kailiawa less than an hour after the abduction occurred.
