MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Police have identified a 35-year-old man who apparently drowned Monday (August 20, 2001) in waters off King’s Landing in Hilo.

The victim was identified by a close relative as Antonio N. Robert, 35, of a Hilo address.

Responding to a 1:20 p.m. call of a swimmer in distress, a fire rescue helicopter pulled the victim’s body from the ocean about 20 minutes later. The victim was later taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was declared dead at 2:45 p.m.

Police said Robert apparently had been fishing alone on the shoreline when he fell into the water.

They have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death and have tentatively classified the case as a public accident.
