A pedestrian was struck by a pickup truck while trying to cross Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona Tuesday night (July 19, 2005).

Responding to a call, Kona patrol officers determined that the pedestrian was struck in front of the Kona Sea Ridge condominium about 8:03 p.m. by a white Chevrolet pickup truck heading north on Alii Drive. The truck then fled the scene.

The victim, a 39-year-old man, was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was reported in critical but stable condition late Tuesday.

Police later found the truck and arrested the driver, identified as Jean Tugaoen, 52, of Honolulu, for driving under the influence of alcohol, negligent injury and other traffic offenses.
