Illinois visitor dies after paragliding 05-22-02

A 43-year-old man visiting from Illinois died Wednesday (May 22, 2002) after an apparent paragliding accident at Honaunau, South Kona.

The victim, identified as Paul S. Reifsnyder, of Des Plains, Illinois, reportedly had been paragliding alone above Honaunau near Kealakekua Bay when he landed hard on the ground and lost consciousness.

Fire rescue personnel gave him cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and took him to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:38 p.m.

An investigation into his death has been classified as a public accident, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
