Kohala Colts tie for first place in basketball tourney 04-02-03

The Kohala Colts coed basketball team shared the top spot with the Maui Suns to win the D.A.R.E. Hawaii Spring Hoops Challenge during a two-day tournament held last week on Kauai.

Both the Colts and Suns wound up with 3-0 records in the tournament, held Sunday (March 23, 2003) and Monday.

A total of six teams from the four counties participated in the tournament. A second Big Island team, the Waiakeawaena Menehunes, finished the tournament with a 1-2 record.

The tournament was played during the 13th annual state training conference of Hawaii Drug Abuse Resistance Education Officers’ Association, which was held at the Kauai Coconut Beach Resort.

Also participating in activities were the Big Island’s D.A.R.E.-Plus Hawaii cheerleaders, one of two only D.A.R.E. cheerleading groups in the nation. The other cheerleading group is from San Diego.

The Kohala Colts were coached by Dennis Kaneshiro, Moses Bautista and Al Nickl; the Waiakeawaina Menehunes, by Gary Yanagi.

Players on the winning Kohala Colts team were Theresa Kitagua, Kelly Zalopany, Janissa Roxburg, Rachel Alcoran, Dennis Kaneshiro, Jordan Kaneshiro, Kelson Kawai, Aaron Bruno, Royce Pascal and Brandon Bautista.

Players on the Waiakeawaena team were Cassandra Kagawa, Melissa Nekoba, Chelsea Buyuan, Jamie Moe, Travis Morante, Dalen Izumo, Kenneth Acob and Kahikili Miranda.
