A 56-year-old visitor from Fort Mills, South Carolina, apparently drowned Friday (April 16, 1999) while snorkeling off Kahuluu Beach in North Kona.

Police are withholding the victim’s name until notification of next of kin.

Police and fire rescue units responded to a 1:45 p.m. call of a possible drowning at the beach. Fire rescue personnel recovered the body from the water.

Witnesses at the scene said they called police when the victim failed to return from snorkeling.

Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, and the case has been classified as a public accident.
