MEDIA RELEASE

A single-story house burned to the ground Saturday (May 15, 1999) in Keauhou Mauka, North Kona.

Responding to a 4:14 p.m. report, police and fire units arrived to find the wooden structure destroyed by flames.

The house, owned by Lawrence Hawelu of Kurtistown, Puna, was unoccupied and there were no reported injuries in the fire.

Neighbors told investigators that they heard what they thought was an explosion in the kitchen before flames were visible. Police said the home had a propane stove.

Damages to the structure and its contents were estimated at $200,000, and the cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.
