Media Release

Big Island police have arrested a Kailua-Kona man in connection with a purse snatching in Kona last week.

A 50-year-old tourist reported last Tuesday (November 27) that two suspects on a moped passed her, grabbed her purse and knocked her to the ground. The suspects then fled the area with her purse.

Police arrested 19-year-old Jeffery Sargent about an hour later. On Thursday (November 29) he was charged with second-degree robbery. His bail was set at $5,000.

At the conclusion of a preliminary hearing in court Tuesday (December 4), a judge bound Sargent over for trial. Sargent is being held at Hawaii Community Correctional Center.

This was the second incident last week in which a suspect was charged for taking a purse. On November 26, police arrested and charged David Battle after he removed a purse from a 68-year-old Japanese tourist.
