MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

A third person has died as a result of a head-on collision that occurred Monday (June 12, 2000) on the Akoni Pule Highway (Route 270) in North Kohala.

Dr. Barton M. Eveleth, 87, of Hawaii, was pronounced dead at 2:22 a.m. at the North Hawaii Community Hospital.

The other two victims were identified as Clifford Ignacio, 52, of Kawaihae, and Emily Stark, 90, of Hawi. Eveleth had been a passenger in Stark’s vehicle.

Investigating officers determined that Ignacio was driving a 1987 Nissan north on Route 270 in the southbound lane around 8 p.m. when his car collided head on with a 1998 Suzuki station wagon driven by Stark near the 18-mile marker and fronting the Pukea Bay Ranch.

This was the 17th traffic fatality so far this year on the Big Island, compared to 10 at the same time last year
