MEDIA RELEASE

A 41-year-old Kona man apparently drowned Wednesday (April 7, 2004) while surfing in waters off Kahaluu Beach Park.

The victim was identified as Jeffrey Cecil, of a Holualoa address.

Police and fire rescue personnel responded to a 5:09 p.m. call of a possible drowning at the beach park

Police determined that Cecil was surfing in waters off the park when he apparently fell off his surfboard and ingested seawater. Witnesses said the victim was brought to shore unconscious and with a faint pulse. A lifeguard and others administered cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, but were unable to revive the victim.

The victim was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6 p.m.

Police have classified the case as a coroner’s inquest and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
