MEDIA RELEASE

East Hawaii detectives have initiated an attempted assault on a law enforcement officer related to an incident that occurred at the Hawaii Police Department Hilo Cellblock on February 23, 2006.

A 52 year-old Hilo man, while being placed in a holding cell by a police officer, attempted to leave the cellblock while the electronically controlled door was being secured. During the course of keeping the prisoner secured and preventing him from leaving the cellblock, the prisoner fell against a concrete bed foundation and struck his head, sustaining injuries. The prisoner was transported to the Hilo Medical Center Emergency Room for treatment by Hawaii Fire Department Rescue personnel.

The prisoner was treated for his injuries and flown, via air ambulance to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu for further treatment. He is currently listed in critical condition.

Police reported that the prisoner, who was arrested for a abuse family or household member complaint that had occurred earlier in the day, had apparently been drinking and under the influence of alcohol at the time of his arrest and during the booking process.

Police are withholding the names of the prisoner and the officer involved. Detectives are continuing the investigation.
