MEDIA RELEASE

A 20-year-old Hilo man was in critical condition Sunday (June 24) after being involved in a motor vehicle/motorcycle crash on Ainaola Drive between Keone Street and Komohana Street.

Responding to a 2:26 a.m. call Sunday, South Hilo patrol officers determined that the 20-year-old Hilo man was traveling west on Ainaola Drive and operating a 2003 Aprili motorcycle when he was rear-ended by a 35-year-old Hilo man who was operating a 1991 Toyota four-door station wagon.

Both drivers were transported by Fire Rescue personnel to the Hilo Medical Center. The driver of the Toyota was treated and released. The motorcycle operator, who was not wearing a helmet, was flown to The Queens Medical Center in Honolulu in critical condition.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers arrested the driver of the Toyota for negligent injury operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. He was released pending further investigation. Speed is also believed to be a factor in this crash.
