Hilo detectives Tuesday (July 13, 1999) charged a Puna man with assault and drug offenses after he allegedly beat his 14-year-old son.

James Carvalho, 36, of Hawaiian Paradise Park, was charged with first-degree assault, commercial promotion of marijuana, promoting a detrimental drug and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $17,500 bail.

Carvalho allegedly slapped and punched his son’s face, then kicked him several times in the side. The son was taken to Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he was reported in stable condition.

Police officers investigating the assault arrested the suspect for the drug offenses as well as assault after they found numerous marijuana plants on his property.
