A 50-year-old Waimea man died as died as a result of injuries sustained in the Saturday afternoon (October 23, 1999) head-on collision on Route 19 near the 6 mm, that had already claimed the life of a Thomas MEHAU of Hilo.

Gary RAMOS, the driver of a 1984 Chevy Pickup that had been heading Hamakua bound when MEHAU’s 1990 Dodge van crossed the centerline and collided head-on into him. RAMOS was transported to Hilo Hospital following the accident. He had remained in critical condition but died Sunday evening (October 24, 1999) and was pronounced dead at 8:59 p.m.

Traffic Enforcement Officers are continuing the investigation into the accident. RAMOS’ death was the 26th traffic fatality so far this year on the Big Island.
