Acting on a tip from an anonymous letter, police found the skeletal remains of a person Wednesday (July 23, 2003) in Hilo.

The remains were located in a wooded area beside Wai’au Stream off Kaiulani Street. Officers also found some personal items near the remains, but no identification.

Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives have initiated a coroner’s inquest in the case in an attempt to determine the cause of death. They are also reviewing missing person reports for the past several years for clues to the identity of the remains.
