Police have released two men who had been arrested Sunday evening (September 23, 2001) during an investigation of an assault that later developed into an investigation of a burglary.

After finding out that the two men had confronted the victim after he had allegedly burglarized a home threatened its occupants, police released them without charges.

Responding to a 10:46 p.m. call reporting a fight at a Kumukoa Street address, officers found three adult males. One of the men said the other two had attacked him with baseball bats.

Police arrested the two alleged assailants, 48 and 39, for assault. Rescue personnel then took the victim, 49, to the Hilo Medical Center for treatment.

On further investigation, however, police discovered that that the reported victim had burglarized a residence on Kumukoa Street and had threatened its occupants with a knife. In addition, they found he had allegedly damaged property within the residence, and on exiting the residence, he had been confronted by the other two men.

Police have initiated two burglary and five terroristic threatening complaints against the burglary suspect and are continuing the investigation.
