During the week of May 12-18, 2003, Big Island police arrested 24 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions, and five were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 325 DUI arrests, compared to 299 during the same period last year, an increase of 9 percent.

There have been 850 major accidents so far this year, compared to 827 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.

There have been 11 fatalities so far this year, compared to 14 for the same period last year, a decrease 21 percent. There has been one fatality attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to five DUI-related fatalities at this time last year, a decrease of 80 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
