During the week of May 21-28, 2001, Big Island police arrested 11 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers arrested were involved in traffic accidents and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 309 DUI arrests, a 35 percent decrease from the 491 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 939 major accidents so far this year, compared to 864 during the same period last year, an increase of 9 percent.

There have been 13 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 10 during the same period last year, an increase of 30 percent. One of the traffic fatalities this year was related to driving while intoxicated, compared to six at the same time last year, a decrease of 83 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
