During the week of May 24-31, 1999, Big Island police arrested 16 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 540 DUI arrests, a 34 percent increase over the 403 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 36 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 890, compared to 939 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.

There have been seven traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 15 fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 53 percent.

There has been one recorded alcohol-related traffic fatality so far this year, compared to eight at the same time last year, a decrease of 88 percent.
