Hawaiʻi Island police detectives have completed their investigation into the 2013 discovery of a body in Hilo.

On January 18, 2013, police discovered a badly decomposed body off the “ATV Trail Park” near Stainback Highway in Hilo. The body was identified through dental records as 38-year-old Shayne Yoshi Kalani Kobayashi of Pāhoa.

The case, which was initially classified as a coroner’s inquest, has been reclassified to a second-degree murder. Police have identified a suspect but no one has been arrested.

The case has been routed to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney for review.
